With Fur Finally Out of Fashion, Peta Sets Its Sights on Wool, Leather and Down

After four decades of emotionally-charged campaigns, Peta founder Ingrid Newkirk can all-but declare victory in the war on fur. Taking on more widely-used animal-based materials will be harder, however.

When Ingrid Newkirk co-founded People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals in 1980, fur was a status symbol. “Everyone aspired to have a fur,” Newkirk recalled. “But that’s all gone now.”
