China’s Luxury Resellers Get Physical

The resale market is expanding from apps to buzzy offline markets as taboos around secondhand fashion fade, interest in sustainability grows and the slowing economy pushes more Chinese consumers into bargain-hunting mode.

On a blistering July weekend, crowds lined up at a new fashion destination in Shanghai. Not to gawp at Louis Vuitton’s colossal cruise ship docked at Taikoo Hui but to jostle for entry at a vintage market in an industrial compound. The event, organised by social commerce app Xiaohongshu, drew the city’s in-crowd and pre-owned fashion enthusiasts alike. It’s one of many examples of the hype the resale sector now enjoys in China, says local sustainability expert Yidi Chen.
